The mission of the Church Street Marketplace Foundation is to provide funding for capital improvements for the Church Street Marketplace District not available from the City of Burlington, to better serve the community. The foundation is not connected with the City of Burlington. It has received 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service.
The Marketplace District’s annual operating budget is funded entirely through fees. Use of “general tax levies” from the City is not permitted. All revenues collected – whether they be from the common area fee, sponsorships, sidewalk café fees – cover annual operating costs only; the Marketplace’s funding model was never designed to cover capital improvements.
Improvements to the Church Street Marketplace’s infrastructure is the guiding function of the Church Street Marketplace Foundation. No funds may be used towards operations. Past projects have included security fencing and gates, recycling containers, electric maintenance vehicles, a landscape design plan and public art projects, including the “Everyone Loves a Parade” Mural in Leahy Way, the Fish Drinking Fountain and Big Joe Burrell Statue.
A volunteer Board of Directors supervises the activities of the Foundation. Board members are:
